The Saddleback College women’s basketball team opened up Orange Empire Conference play with a 78-49 win over Santa Ana College on Wednesday evening at Saddleback Gymnasium.  The freshman combination of Johnondra Patterson and Keisha Cox combined to score 50 points to lead the Gauchos, as Saddleback evened its record at 8-8 on the season.

Patterson finished with 25 points, 16 of which came in the second half.  She was 10-for-20 from the field as the Gauchos shot 41% from the field in the second frame.

Cox also finished with 25 points and was 7-for-16 from the field.  She was also red hot from the free throw line, finishing 8-of-10 from the charity stripe.  Cox also led Saddleback with 11 rebounds and five assists.

The Gauchos carried a 3-point lead into halftime and early in the second half went on a 14-2 run to open up a 53-39 lead with 11:50 remaining on the clock.  Saddleback never looked back and led by as many as 31 points during the second half of play.

Santa Ana was led by Barbie Toscano, who finished with 13 points.  The Lady Dons fell to 7-12 on the season and 0-1 in conference play with the loss and will host Cypress College on Friday night.

The Gauchos will play again next Wednesday night when they travel to Orange Coast College for a 5:30 PM tipoff.

Saddleback (5-6) dropped an 83-64 decision to College of the Canyons (9-4) in the opening round of the Orange Coast Christmas Classic as the Gauchos were unable to overcome a 17-point halftime deficit. Keisha Cox scored 26 points, Johnondra Patterson added 13 points, Nicole Johnson snagged 10 rebounds, and Lindsey Sundin recorded four blocked shots but the Gauchos shot just 33 percent from the floor (24 of 71) while Canyons shot 43 percent (35 of 81). Saddleback will play El Camino in a consolation semifinal on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Saddleback women’s basketball team is back where they started the season after beating Victor Valley College, 81-61, on Tuesday evening at Saddleback Gymnasium.  The Gauchos have now won four of their past five games to even their record at 5-5 on the season.

Saddleback sprinted to a 37-23 halftime lead behind the shooting of freshman guard Keisha Cox.  Cox had 19 points in the first half before sitting out a good portion of the second half in foul trouble.

Freshman forward Johnondra Patterson and freshman guard Jasmine Hamilton both finished with 10 points apiece as the Gauchos led throughout the entire game.

Saddleback now sits at 5-5 on the season and will play next in the Orange Coast Classic this weekend at Orange Coast College.

Victor Valley falls to 3-8 with the loss.  The Rams were led by Gloria Thomas, who finished with 24 points.

Saddleback won two of three games over the weekend in Santa Maria at the Bulldog Tournament to take third place with a pair of strong defensive outings.

The Gauchos (4-5) defeated Cuesta College, 65-38, in the opening round of the tournament to step up into the championship bracket before falling to Orange Empire Conference foe Fullerton, 72-42, in the semifinals. The Gauchos bounced back in the third place game to stymie Monterey Peninsula, 49-25.

"We really played well defensively, shutting down Monterey Peninsula in the second half. We actually played well in all three games but committed a couple of turnovers late in the first half against Fullerton which allowed them to get a lead at halftime," Saddleback head coach Fentriss Winn said.

The Gauchos will add a game on Tuesday, Dec. 16, when they host Victor Valley at 6:00 p.m.

The Saddleback Gauchos played arguably their best game of the 2008-09 campaign on Wednesday night in defeating Los Angeles Southwest College, 88-59.  Freshman Johnondra Patterson scored 28 points to lead all scorers as the Gauchos improved to 2-4 on the season.

Saddleback shot 55% from the field and 50% from behind the arc in the first half in racing to a 22-point lead at the break.  Patterson finished game 13-of-27 from the field, leading the Gauchos with 14 rebounds and four steals.

Patterson may have grabbed the headlines for Saddleback, but freshman Keisha Cox was not far behind.  Cox led the Gauchos with seven assists and finished with 19 points of her own in just 24 minutes on the court.  Freshman Antoinette Maynard also had a big second half for Saddleback, finishing with 14 points.

In what had been a woeful season thus far from the free throw line, Saddleback found its range from the charity stripe on Wednesday night, connecting on 12-of-14 free throws to keep the Cougars out of reach down the stretch.

The Gauchos improved to 2-4 on the season with the win and will host Los Angeles Trade Tech on Saturday night at 5:30 PM.  Los Angeles Southwest fell to 3-5 with the loss.

Saddleback fell to Southwestern by a 75-64 count on Tuesday night, struggling to get the ball upcourt and also with errant shots. Despite 20 points and eight rebounds from Johnondra Patterson and 20 points and four assists from Keisha Cox, the Gauchos fell to 1-4 on the season.

The Gauchos held an early 5-2 lead before commiting four straight turnovers that led to eight points for the Jaguars and a 10-5 advantage. Saddleback was able to catch up by halftime, knotting the score at 28-28. But Southwestern's backcourt pressure built a quick 10-point cushion in the second half which Saddleback was never able to erase.

Saddleback committed 30 turnovers in the contest and was helped by 29 turnovers from the Jaguars. However, the Gauchos shot just 35 percent from the floor (23 of 65) and 48 percent from the foul line (14 of 29) to squash their comeback chances.

The Saddleback women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season on Friday night with a 56-23 win over San Diego Mesa and it was the defense that made the difference. The Gauchos allowed Mesa to shoot just 18% from the field in shutting down an Olympian offense that managed only six points in the first half.

Johnondra Patterson led the Gauchos on offense with 16 points, finishing 7-of-18 from the field. Patterson also collected 12 rebounds along with Lindsey Sundin as Saddleback outrebounded San Diego Mesa, 57-47. Keshia Moore had the hot hand down the stretch for Saddleback, finishing with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting and leading the Gauchos with three blocked shots.

It was the first win of the season for the Gauchos after a difficult three-game stretch against Los Angeles City College, Mt. San Antonio College and Chaffey College. Saddleback will have next week off for the holidays before hitting the court again on December 2 at home against Southwestern College.

Joy Tili led San Diego Mesa with seven points while Tessa Spence led the Olympians with 12 rebounds.
